The anticipation about The Game Awards has been intense, especially after host Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling photo of a strange statue. The secret has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is developing a brand-new Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a audacious trailer packed with striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the very unleashing of hell.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio warned that a direct sequel to its beloved RPGs is not being worked on now.
However, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This distinction implies that the team is likely designing a faster-paced experience rather than another tactical title. For now, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
What Makes Divinity Special
The Divinity series is universally respected and many say it pioneered the modern wave of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are known for intricate stories, branching plots, and complex character building—elements that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs you can achieve with a specific type of character with a unique decision path.
The series is also notoriously open-ended, allowing players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be completed in a variety of manners, often in lateral fashion.
- You might find an answer because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a inventive way.
A New Chapter Begins
It is this design philosophy that allow people to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games of all time. Now, fans can anticipate more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
